Amid growing protests across Assam over the lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, police have arrested three individuals from various districts for allegedly promoting the brutal act on social media. The arrests occurred in Kamrup, Sribhumi, and Gauripur in Dhubri, coinciding with ongoing demonstrations highlighting the deteriorating safety of minorities in Bangladesh.

In Kamrup district, Mohammad Shaif Akhtar Ali was detained in Rangia town on Tuesday for allegedly posting supportive content regarding the lynching of a Hindu youth in Bangladesh. This arrest followed a complaint filed by Hindu organizations, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) at the Rangia police station. A police officer noted, “Based on the complaint, after a preliminary investigation, the youth was arrested.” Reportedly, Ali had shared a video of the lynching on Facebook and Instagram, endorsing the crime.

Meanwhile, in Gauripur, police apprehended Babul Hussain, a resident of Baniyamari Sixth Block village, for allegedly disseminating inflammatory content on social media in favor of extremist elements in Bangladesh. Authorities indicated that Hussain had uploaded videos that appeared to endorse communal violence against Hindus, including horrific acts of killing and burning victims tied to trees. Following his detention, Gauripur Police began detailed interrogations to ascertain whether Hussain acted independently or had connections to organized extremist networks.

In Hailakandi, Izazur Rahman Laskar, a 19-year-old from Gamoria village in Sribhumi district, was arrested for allegedly circulating an inflammatory video on Instagram that sought to justify the killing of a Hindu man on communal grounds. Laskar faces charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which concern promoting enmity between groups, making prejudicial assertions against national integration, deliberately insulting religious beliefs, and making statements likely to incite public disorder.

As police actions unfolded, protests against the lynching intensified throughout Assam. Demonstrations were reported in Tezpur on Wednesday, where several organizations and local residents demanded stringent actions and a decisive response from Indian authorities. Similar protests took place on Tuesday across various locations including Sonitpur, Bijni, Jagiroad, Hojai, Lahorighat, Margherita, Hailakandi, and Nalbari.
