Remembering the Legacy: Biswanath’s Heartfelt Tribute on 11th Anniversary
This year marks the 11th anniversary of the Sonajuli massacre, a tragic event that deeply impacted Assam and the nation as a whole. To honor the victims, the All Santal Students’ Union (ASSU) along with local residents and various social organizations held a tribute at Sonajuli. The solemn occasion included the lighting of lamps and prayer offerings for the departed souls.
Attending the ceremony was Biswanath MLA Pramod Borthakur, who paid floral tributes, standing in solidarity with the grieving families. He reiterated his call for peace, harmony, and development in the border areas to prevent such atrocities from occurring in the future.
The Sonajuli massacre, which occurred on this day in 2014, saw the brutal killing of at least 30 innocent civilians, including infants, women, and the elderly. The attackers, suspected militants from the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), targeted individuals in the Phulbari and Sonajuli regions along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, leaving a permanent scar on the collective memory of the community.
The remembrance of this tragic incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need for continued efforts towards peace and reconciliation in the region.
