Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the governing body of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, recently executed a significant annual mock drill to enhance its emergency response capabilities. On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, the drill simulated a severe scenario involving a substantial LPG leakage from the flange of LPG Installation-1, with a focus on safely managing the incident and ensuring worker safety.
The exercise commenced with the activation of emergency protocols following the assumption that four workers were trapped and suffering from asphyxia due to the gas leak. An emergency siren was promptly sounded, leading to the immediate evacuation of personnel from the affected area. This swift action highlighted the importance of preparedness in mitigating potential hazards in industrial environments.
As the mock drill progressed, the Utilities Department efficiently deployed the sprinkler system alongside remotely controlled oscillating monitors to effectively disperse the leaked LPG. Fire response was further bolstered by two fire tenders from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Fire Wing, which initiated water sprays on the leak site. During the scenario, emergency services successfully rescued one casualty, who was quickly transported to the hospital via ambulance, while CISF personnel and Home Guards secured the perimeter to maintain safety.
The collaborative effort of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Gas Safety Department, and CISF was evident as they conducted thorough gas monitoring and facilitated the rescue of the remaining three personnel. Their prompt actions not only ensured the safety of all involved but also helped to successfully stop the LPG leak. Additionally, the A.P. State Fire Services and NTPC Simhadri Fire Wing participated in the drill, showcasing a unified approach to emergency management.
Upon stabilizing the situation, the team signaled the completion of the drill by sounding the ‘All Clear’ siren, reflecting the effective coordination among various departments. The active involvement of heads of departments from HR, Administration, Safety, EMF, ENMD, Utilities, and other relevant sectors emphasized the drill’s significance in fostering a culture of safety and readiness.
This annual mock drill reinforces RINL’s commitment to safety protocols and emergency preparedness, aligning with industry standards to mitigate risks and protect workers. As incidents involving hazardous materials become a growing concern in industrial sectors, RINL’s proactive steps set an example for comprehensive emergency response strategies.
