Tipra Motha Declares Solo TTAADC Struggle Amid Tiprasa Accord Delay
Agartala, Dec 21: Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the chief of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), announced on Sunday that his party would contest the upcoming elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council independently if the Tiprasa Accord is not implemented. Debbarma criticized Chief Minister Manik Saha’s statement that the BJP would secure all 28 seats in the tribal council, asserting, “If the Tiprasa Accord is not implemented, we will fight the election alone because I cannot fool my people.”
While claiming that the central government is ready to implement the Accord, Debbarma noted that some state leaders seem to oppose its execution. He emphasized that there would be no compromise regarding the script for Kokborok, the primary language of many tribal communities in Tripura. He referenced past tensions arising from attempts to impose Urdu in East Pakistan, stating that the choice of script for Kokborok is an internal issue that shouldn’t be dictated by outsiders.
He urged both the central and state governments to respect the indigenous people’s sentiments concerning the Kokborok script. “We will not change our stand. This is our internal issue,” he asserted.
Addressing the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, Debbarma emphasized the need for a clear policy from the central and state governments regarding the Northeast, given the presence of fundamentalist groups across the border. He expressed concerns about the oppression of minorities, particularly indigenous tribes in Bangladesh, warning that radical forces could provide refuge to anti-Indian elements. “A nationalist party can’t remain a silent spectator in the volatile situation,” he stated.
The TMP, an ally of the BJP, had entered into an agreement with the central and state governments in March 2024 aimed at the overall development of indigenous people. In the 2021 TTADC elections, the TMP, then a newly established regional party, managed to defeat the BJP, indicating the shifting political dynamics in the region.
