Chaos in Balochistan: Multiple Blasts Disrupt Regional Rail Traffic
Suspected insurgents targeted railway tracks in Pakistan’s troubled Balochistan province, leading to significant disruptions in train services, including the Jaffer Express. The attacks occurred on Friday, December 19, with one explosion in the Mushkaf area damaging about three feet of track. Another blast in the Dasht area inflicted further damage. Quetta Senior Superintendent of Police Shahid Nawaz confirmed that both the Jaffer Express and Bolan Mail passenger trains were affected by these incidents.
In the aftermath of the blasts, train services from Quetta to other provinces experienced considerable delays due to the damaged main railway line. SSP Nawaz stated that the schedule for all passenger trains leaving Quetta from Saturday onward would be established only after security clearance is obtained. He underscored the importance of passenger safety, noting that special security measures are being implemented for all trains departing from Quetta.
Despite the prevailing security concerns, a special service of the Jaffer Express was authorized to operate to Peshawar on Saturday, prompted by a rise in passenger demand. Railway officials indicated that this special service was necessary while regular train operations awaited safety approvals.
This latest incident marks a troubling trend, as the Jaffer Express has faced multiple attacks over the past months. The train has been the target of insurgents on several occasions this year, with at least three attacks on both the Jaffer Express and Bolan Mail resulting in damage to the railway infrastructure, although fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
