Rakesh Bedi Defends ‘Dhurandhar’ Trailer Kiss Controversy: ‘Criticism is Stupid and Crazy!’
The recent release of “Dhurandhar” has captured audience attention with strong reviews and impressive box office results, yet not all news surrounding the film has been positive. Actor Rakesh Bedi, who is receiving accolades for his performance, has found himself mired in controversy after a trailer launch incident where he kissed his on-screen daughter, Sara Arjun, prompting accusations of inappropriate behavior.
Amid mounting criticism over the last month, Bedi has chosen to address the situation directly. Speaking with Hindustan Times, he expressed his frustration over the backlash, calling the accusations “stupid.” The incident occurred during the film’s trailer launch when Bedi greeted Arjun with a hug and a kiss on the shoulder, an act that was quickly misconstrued by some as inappropriate.
Bedi clarified that the relationship he shares with Arjun, who is significantly younger than him, is akin to that of a father and daughter. He stated, “Sara is less than half my age and plays my daughter. Whenever we met during the shoot, she would greet me with a hug, just as a daughter would with her father.” He emphasized that their rapport, built over time on set, was genuine and affectionate.
Pointing to the presence of Arjun’s parents, Raj Arjun and Sanya, at the trailer launch, Bedi questioned the validity of claims suggesting ill intent behind his actions. “Why would I kiss her with ill intent publicly on a stage? I mean, her parents were there. People are just crazy when they claim these things. They just need to create an issue out of nothing on social media,” he added.
Bedi’s remarks reveal a deeper concern about how social media often distorts personal interactions. He expressed disappointment that the warmth conveyed in his gesture was overshadowed by negative interpretations, saying, “The affection of an elderly man towards a young girl. Dekhne wale ki aankh mein gadbad hai to kya kar sakte ho (What can you do when people perceive it wrongly)?”
“Dhurandhar,” directed by Aditya Dhar, is an action-packed spy thriller starring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, with Bedi and Akshaye Khanna playing negative characters. The film has performed remarkably well at the box office, grossing over ₹4.56 billion in the domestic market within just two weeks of its release.
As the film continues to gain traction, it remains to be seen how public sentiment will shift regarding both “Dhurandhar” and the surrounding controversy involving Rakesh Bedi. This incident highlights the delicate balance between on-screen portrayals and off-screen perceptions in the age of social media.
