Shocking Rise: 11 Murder Cases in Aizawl District This Year
At least 11 murder cases have been recorded in Aizawl district, Mizoram, since January this year, with investigations completed in 10 of those cases, a police officer announced on Thursday. Superintendent of Police (SP) Zosangliana informed reporters that from January to December 17, a total of 1,764 criminal cases were registered across various police stations under the Aizawl District Executive Force (DEF). The majority of these incidents involved theft and burglary, which comprised 1,176 cases, representing 66 percent of the total.
To date, approximately 2,000 offenders have been apprehended in connection with these criminal activities. Out of the 1,764 cases, investigations have concluded in 1,009 cases, with charge sheets filed, while 421 cases are still under investigation and 333 remain unresolved. The SP reported a high conviction rate of 91.7 percent for those prosecuted.
Among the serious crimes reported, the 11 murder cases stand out, with 10 investigations already concluded and one case still ongoing. In addition, the police recorded 32 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, resulting in the arrest of 36 individuals involved in drug-related offenses.
There were also 158 reported cases of unnatural deaths during this timeframe, which included 30 suicides, 36 fatalities due to drug overdoses, 12 drownings, and 78 accidental deaths.
In light of the upcoming holiday season, law enforcement is intensifying security measures in Aizawl district to facilitate a safe and peaceful celebration of Christmas and New Year. The SP emphasized that special precautions will be implemented to enforce prohibitory orders concerning the use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic materials during the festivities.
