Cachar District’s Urgent Prohibitory Order: Impact on Indo-Bangladesh Border
GUWAHATI: The Cachar district administration in Assam has implemented prohibitory restrictions along sensitive sections of the Indo-Bangladesh border, effective December 16. This action aims to curb illegal movement and mitigate potential threats to law and order.
District Magistrate Mridul Yadav issued the order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, highlighting concerns about possible activities by extremist elements and unauthorized cross-border operations. The administration expressed that unchecked movement, particularly at night, could facilitate unlawful actions and upset public peace.
Under the new restrictions, individual movement is prohibited from sunset to sunrise within a one-kilometre area along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Cachar district. Additionally, movement on the river Surma and its high banks within Indian territory during nighttime has been banned due to concerns over misuse of these riverine routes.
The directive also imposes controls on boating and fishing activities on the river Surma. Fishing will only be permitted for local residents for personal consumption, contingent upon prior approval from the Circle Officer of Katigorah, along with compliance with existing lease conditions. Copies of such permissions are required to be submitted to both the District Magistrate and the Commandant of the 170th Battalion of the Border Security Force at Dholcherra.
In a further precautionary measure, the transportation of essential commodities including sugar, rice, wheat, edible oil, SK oil, and salt has been restricted during nighttime hours within a five-kilometre zone along the Bangladesh border. Any exemptions will be granted only after rigorous verification by supply officials for specific purposes and durations.
Government employees, both state and central, performing official duties in the border areas are exempt from this directive. Issued in the interest of public order, this order has come into effect immediately and will remain in place for two months unless modified or rescinded earlier.
