Honoring Vijay Diwas: Tripura Guv’s Call for Lasting Peace in Neighbourhood
Agartala, December 16 (IANS): Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Tuesday emphasized the historic significance of Vijay Diwas, which commemorates the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers on December 16, 1971, marking the largest military surrender in history. During the 54th Vijay Diwas celebrations at the Albert Ekka War Memorial, the Governor acknowledged that the current situation in Bangladesh is a “temporary phase” and expressed optimism for the return of peace and stability.
He noted that a harmonious neighborhood benefits both Bangladesh and India, highlighting the importance of regional stability. The Indian Army organized the solemn ceremony, which celebrated India’s pivotal victory in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, wherein Tripura played a crucial strategic role. The state served as a key operational base for Indian forces, offering refuge to freedom fighters from the Bangladesh ‘Mukti Bahini’ and a large influx of refugees escaping the violence in East Pakistan.
In paying tribute to the martyrs, Governor Reddy Nallu remarked that the people of Tripura stood steadfastly with the Indian Army during the war, demonstrating unwavering support during a defining moment in the nation’s history. He recounted the widespread oppression faced by the populace in West Pakistan, which forced millions to flee to India, leading to significant support for the ‘Mukti Bahini’ under the leadership of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, ultimately resulting in Bangladesh’s liberation.
The Governor also honored the valor of infantry battalions involved in the conflict, particularly recognizing Param Vir Chakra recipient Albert Ekka of the 73 Mountain Brigade, after whom the memorial is named. “On this Vijay Diwas, I extend my heartfelt respect to all the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation and to those who continue to serve with honor and dedication,” he stated to the media.
The ceremony attracted dignitaries, including Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman, Director General of Police Anurag, Major General Sameer Sharan Kartikeya, and senior military officials, civilians, and veterans. When asked about recent developments in Bangladesh, Governor Nallu chose not to comment on geopolitical issues, asserting it wasn’t the appropriate venue, while reiterating that peace and stability in the neighboring country are crucial for regional well-being.
The event demonstrated a strong sense of patriotism, with attendees paying homage to the martyrs. The Albert Ekka War Memorial stood as a powerful symbol of courage, sacrifice, and Tripura’s critical role in the 1971 conflict. “The 1971 war included two major operations-Operation ‘Cactus Lily’ and Operation ‘Nut Cracker’—in which the 57 Mountain Division actively participated, supported by the 57 Mountain Artillery Brigade,” noted defense analyst Manas Paul.
He explained that both operations advanced from Agartala toward Dhaka, culminating in the unconditional surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers on December 16, 1971. Lt. General Jagjit Singh Aurora, Major General (Retd) Ian Cardozo, Lt. Arun Khetrapal, and Lance Naik Albert Ekka are recognized as heroes of this historic war.
