Transforming Mumbai: AAI’s Radar Relocation Paves the Way for Affordable Housing, Says Rammohan Naidu

In a significant development for urban housing in Mumbai, the Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) high-frequency radar currently located at Dahisar is set to be relocated to Gorai. This move, announced by Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, will open up hundreds of acres for affordable housing initiatives in the area. The decision follows a meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Maharashtra government.

Minister Naidu stated that the relocation process will soon be presented for cabinet approval, paving the way for construction to begin on crucial housing projects. The existing radar sites at Dahisar and Juhu have limited the height of buildings, thereby stifling urban development. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized this issue during a recent Legislative Assembly session, announcing that the state government would bear the relocation costs and provide suitable alternative land for the radar installations.

“This project has impacted urban development in North Mumbai, affecting numerous residents who are forced to live in aging, unsafe conditions. With this decision, we are taking substantial steps toward fulfilling the housing dreams of Dahisar’s residents,” Naidu remarked. He noted that the Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, who represents North Mumbai, has been instrumental in advocating for this change, demonstrating a united effort between various levels of government.

The radar’s relocation will free up approximately 1,000 acres across a six-kilometer stretch for new housing developments, marking a turning point for affordable living in Dahisar. Naidu described this shift as a balance between meeting housing demands and ensuring aviation safety, highlighting that it will benefit thousands of families while spurring economic growth in the region.

Goyal echoed Naidu’s sentiments, announcing that the next five years could see an estimated 50,000 new or redeveloped homes, complete with essential amenities. “This historic decision is the result of persistent follow-ups and close collaboration between the central and state governments. We anticipate a swift restart for many stalled projects, ultimately transforming North Mumbai into ‘Uttam Mumbai,'” he stated.

Chief Minister Fadnavis confirmed that the land at Gorai will be transferred to the Centre at no cost and noted that 40% of the AAI’s land at Dahisar will be allocated for public purposes. Additionally, an alternative site at Juhu is under consideration for the relocation of the radar there, pending a technical evaluation.

Once the radar centers are moved, redevelopment efforts in Dahisar and Juhu will accelerate, Fadnavis added. He expressed optimism that this initiative will eliminate the perception of Dahisar as merely the “last suburb” of Mumbai and position it as a burgeoning growth hub, characterized by improved living conditions and a sustainable environment.

As preparations for this transformative project unfold, residents of Dahisar can look forward to the opening of new housing opportunities that promise a better quality of life in one of Mumbai’s rapidly developing areas.
