Inside the Kalkaji police station on Saturday, family members of Anuradha Kapoor gathered, reflecting on years of silence. They had not been in touch with the 52-year-old, including her cousin who lives nearby in Southeast Delhi. On Friday, Anuradha and her two sons, Ashish, 32, and Chaitanya, 27, were found dead in what is believed to be a suicide at their apartment in G Block, Kalkaji. Their father, Sanjeev Kapoor, a property dealer, had recently died after battling multiple health issues, including diabetes, leaving the family burdened with severe debt.
Police reports indicate that Anuradha and her sons were deeply indebted, owing money to approximately 40 to 50 creditors. They had moved into their Kalkaji flat in August 2023 and reportedly relied on borrowed funds for survival, acquiring sums ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 from numerous individuals. The rent for the five-room apartment was Rs 34,000 per month, but the family defaulted after paying for only the initial months, and they had not paid rent for almost two years.
After several months of dispute regarding the unpaid rent, the landlord, based in Mumbai, sought legal assistance to evict the family. On Friday afternoon, a team of local policemen and a bailiff visited the residence to enforce the eviction order. When there was no response, they used a duplicate key to gain entry, discovering a tragic scene inside.
Anuradha and her younger son were located in the drawing room, while the elder son was found in the bedroom. Authorities reportedly recovered a one-and-a-half-page suicide note attributing their decision to financial difficulties. It detailed the family’s struggles, mentioning that the husband had leased the flat just months prior.
The bodies have been transferred to the mortuary at AIIMS for further examination, as mandated by Section 194 of the BNSS. As relatives expressed their shock and grief, the broader implications of this tragic event-the pressures of financial insecurity and the resulting despair-resonate within the community, prompting urgent discussions around mental health and support.
