Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar emphasized the importance of the cooperative movement in fostering self-reliance in India, highlighting Assam’s pivotal role in this initiative during the opening of the three-day 4th Cooperative Mela 2025 on Saturday in Guwahati. Speaking before an audience, Gurjar described the cooperative movement in Assam as a profound reflection of the state’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
He noted the establishment of the Ministry of Cooperation in 2021 as a major milestone, essential for creating a robust framework for a world-class cooperative system across the nation. Celebrating Assam’s proactive measures in this arena, Gurjar pointed out that the state’s leadership in key national initiatives, including the complete computerization of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), has set a benchmark, with over 800 PACS already implementing the new Model Byelaws.
This advancement, he remarked, is empowering young people and women, promoting entrepreneurship, and driving financial inclusion for more than 32 lakh members. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Minister of Cooperation, the vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’—translated as “Prosperity through Cooperation”—is fast becoming a reality, he added.
Gurjar highlighted that Assam is keenly aligned with the National Cooperative Policy 2025’s goal of establishing at least one cooperative in every village by 2026. He called for a collective effort to ensure a prosperous, self-reliant, and cooperative-driven future for the state.
State Minister for Cooperation Jogen Mohan, who also addressed the gathering, labeled the exhibition a celebration of grassroots empowerment. He commended participants for their resourcefulness, successfully transforming waste materials into valuable resources. Mohan elaborated on the extensive benefits these cooperatives provide, which range from producing essential goods to supporting women-led Self-Help Groups.
The Cooperative Mela features participation from 160 cooperative societies across various sectors, including handloom, fisheries, dairy, agriculture, and enterprises led by youth and women. This event serves as a vibrant platform for showcasing local innovations, products, and successful stories of cooperation.
