Chandni Chowk, a vibrant marketplace nestled in the heart of Old Delhi, stands as one of the most significant historical sites in India, drawing millions of tourists and locals every year. This iconic market, nearly 375 years old, was established by the renowned Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his daughter.
Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor, founded Chandni Chowk in 1650 AD after relocating the empire’s capital from Agra to what is now known as Old Delhi. He named his new city Shahjahanabad and designated Chandni Chowk as the central marketplace. Historical accounts reveal that Shah Jahan’s daughter, Jahanara Begum, had a passion for shopping, frequently visiting various markets in Delhi. Upon learning of her interest, the emperor decided to create a marketplace in front of the Lal Quila, or Red Fort.
Construction of this historic market began in 1650, with Jahanara Begum personally overseeing the design of a lively and aesthetically pleasing commercial hub at the heart of Mughal India. The bazaar was home to over 1,500 businesses and was segmented into four main areas, including Urdu Bazar, Johri Bazar, and Ashrafi Bazar. Additionally, a central canal, fed by the waters of the Yamuna River, flowed through the market, enriching its aesthetic appeal.
Initially called the Shahjahanabad bazaar, the market was eventually renamed Chandni Chowk, which means “Moonlight Square.” This name referenced the reflection of moonlight on the Yamuna waters in the central canal. Under Shah Jahan’s reign, Chandni Chowk evolved beyond a mere marketplace; it became the epicenter of commercial and cultural activity in the city. The layout of its shops highlighted the immense wealth of the Mughal Empire, attracting traders from across Asia and Europe.
At its zenith, the market and its surrounding area transformed into an affluent neighborhood, home to the wealthy elite of the time. Chandni Chowk played a pivotal role in bolstering trade and the economy of Delhi, drawing merchants from all corners of the globe.
Today, while Chandni Chowk continues to serve as a major commercial center in Delhi, it has largely lost its former splendor, characterized now by narrow, congested lanes and high population density. The market’s rich history, once a showcase of opulence and trade, now coexists with the challenges posed by urbanization.
