The Sri Lankan cricket team’s recent tour of Pakistan was thrown into turmoil following a bomb blast in Islamabad, raising serious concerns among players about their safety. Faced with security risks, several team members contemplated returning home. The situation was stabilized after intervention by the Pakistani military, and images circulating on social media showcased the rigorous security arrangements established to safeguard the team during their stay.
After the conclusion of a tri-series that involved Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe, captain Dasun Shanaka highlighted the impact of this security situation. “We enjoyed this tournament as a group. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to go out much,” he remarked, reflecting on the imposed restrictions following the attack. He expressed his gratitude towards the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for their diligent efforts in ensuring the team’s safety throughout the tour. “Credit to the security forces; they supported us in every situation. It’s not easy to handle all this and organize everything. I must thank PCB for ensuring our safety,” he stated.
Despite the secured environment, the Sri Lankan team faced significant challenges in their performance, particularly during the tri-series final against Pakistan. Shanaka acknowledged the difficulties they encountered with batting, especially against spin bowlers. “We must realize when to take chances against spin-especially left-handers getting out to off-spinners and right-handers to left-arm spin. Those were avoidable,” he noted.
While the match results were disappointing, Shanaka remained optimistic about future cricket matches against Pakistan. “We take this as learning. Hopefully, we’ll correct these issues,” he said. He expressed confidence in returning to Pakistan for future series, stating, “I’m very confident about that… Hopefully, in the future, I’ll get the chance to come to Pakistan again and play good cricket.”
