Katigorah police in Cachar district seized a significant consignment of foreign-made cigarettes on Saturday during a routine check at Gumra along National Highway 6. Officers intercepted a truck bound for Tripura and Meghalaya, describing the recovery as a “significant haul.” Authorities reported that the vehicle contained 120 cartons of foreign cigarettes valued at approximately ₹3.5 lakh, alongside a stockpile of illegal Burmese areca nuts. The driver, identified as Ajaymani Jamatia from Tripura, has been detained for further questioning. Officials confirmed that these inspections will continue as part of ongoing efforts to combat the smuggling of contraband goods along interstate routes.
