Transforming Lives: The Impact of AI Chatbots on Daily Interactions
Three years ago, if someone needed to fix a leaky faucet or grasp the concept of inflation, they typically resorted to one of three methods: entering their question into Google, searching for a how-to video on YouTube, or asking Alexa for help. Today, however, many start with a completely different strategy: they turn to ChatGPT and ask directly. As a professor and director of research impact and AI strategy at Mississippi State University Libraries, I study information retrieval, and I observe that this move towards ChatGPT as the primary tool for information searches represents a fundamental change in how we use technology.
The significant shift isn’t that other tools have disappeared; rather, ChatGPT has established itself as the gateway to information. Just months after its launch on November 30, 2022, ChatGPT reached 100 million weekly users. By late 2025, that number skyrocketed to 800 million, marking it as one of the world’s most widely used consumer technologies. This surge isn’t just a fleeting curiosity; it reflects real behavioral changes. A Pew Research Center study from 2025 found that 34 percent of U.S. adults had utilized ChatGPT, doubling the figure from 2023. Among adults under 30, 58 percent have tried it. An AP-NORC poll indicated that about 60 percent of U.S. adults using AI do so for information searches, a trend that rises to 74 percent for those under 30.
Traditional search engines remain essential in the online information landscape, yet the nature of searches has transformed noticeably since ChatGPT emerged. Google previously served as the go-to source for a range of queries, from simple tasks like resetting a router to more complex ones like understanding the debt ceiling. However, everyday questions that require quick clarifications are now addressed more efficiently by ChatGPT, which provides answers faster and in a more straightforward manner than a list of links.
People are recognizing this trend. A 2025 consumer survey in the U.S. revealed that 55 percent of respondents have turned to OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini AI for queries they would have once directed solely to Google. Generative AI platforms are now growing 165 times faster than traditional search traffic, with around 13 million U.S. adults adopting generative AI as their primary discovery tool online. Importantly, this doesn’t signify the end of Google searches; it indicates that ChatGPT has taken over the types of questions requiring concise explanations rather than lists of links. For inquiries about policy updates, definitions, or crafting polite email responses, ChatGPT is quicker and offers a conversational feel that users find appealing.
Meanwhile, Google is adapting as well. Its search interface has evolved over the past three years with the integration of its AI system, Gemini. The “AI Overview” summaries appearing above search results can swiftly answer many straightforward questions, although the accuracy can vary. Many users now don’t look past these AI-generated answers, contributing to the rising trend of “zero-click” searches. Data indicates visits from Google to news sites fell sharply from over 2.3 billion in mid-2024 to under 1.7 billion by May 2025, while the proportion of news-related searches resulting in zero clicks jumped from 56 percent to 69 percent within a year. Although Google excels in offering a variety of sources and perspectives, its results can feel overwhelming and optimized for clicks rather than clarity. In contrast, ChatGPT prioritizes focused, conversational responses, though it may lack the source transparency and multiple viewpoints found in Google searches. Accuracy concerns arise for both tools. While Google’s strength lies in comparing multiple sources, ChatGPT’s reliability hinges on the quality of the user’s prompt and their awareness of when to seek additional verification.
The influence of ChatGPT extends beyond search engines, affecting the landscape of voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home. Despite reported high ownership rates, the popularity is slightly declining, with about 34 percent of individuals aged 12 and older owning a smart speaker in 2025, down from 35 percent in 2023. This stagnation might imply a migration towards more complex queries using ChatGPT, as people seek detailed explanations, step-by-step guides, or assistance with drafting documents. Voice assistants that provide brief responses feel limited compared to ChatGPT’s capabilities.
On the other hand, YouTube remains a dominant platform, boasting around 2.74 billion users in 2024, consistently increasing since 2010. About 90 percent of U.S. teens use YouTube, making it the primary platform for that age group. However, the type of content sought has evolved; users frequently start with ChatGPT and turn to YouTube only if they require deeper insights through video demonstrations. Tasks like explaining health benefits or drafting complaint emails usually get a summary or checklist from ChatGPT first. YouTube becomes a secondary resource for visual guidance. Similarly, software engineers, who historically turned to platforms like Stack Overflow for advice, saw query volumes decline significantly after ChatGPT’s release, with traffic plunging by about 50 percent from 2022 to 2024. When a chatbot can provide code snippets and explanations on demand, fewer users feel the need to ask questions in public forums.
Three years after its debut, ChatGPT has not replaced existing technology; rather, it has reshaped it. The default search behavior has shifted. Search engines continue to be valuable for in-depth research and complex comparisons, while YouTube remains essential for visual learning. Smart speakers still offer hands-free convenience. Nonetheless, in moments when people seek clarification or assistance, many now favor starting with a chat conversation over a traditional search box. This marks the true impact of ChatGPT: it did not merely add another application; it fundamentally altered our approach to seeking information.
