Why Big Tech Fears California’s AI Bill Despite Advocating for Regulation | Unveiling the Truth

California legislators are poised to vote on SB 1047, a bill aimed at regulating AI development and deployment within the state, despite opposition from major tech companies. The bill, proposed by State Senator Scott Wiener, mandates safety testing for advanced AI models exceeding $100 million in development cost or requiring significant computing power. It also requires AI developers to implement a “kill switch” to disable AI models that malfunction.

The bill grants the state attorney general the authority to sue non-compliant developers, especially if AI technology poses threats like taking over government systems. Additionally, third-party auditors would assess developers’ safety protocols, and whistleblower protections would be strengthened.

Though the bill has passed the state Senate and is set for a full Assembly vote, it faces criticism from some lawmakers and tech giants like Google and Meta. They argue it could hinder AI development and drive developers out of California. Notably, some technologists support the bill, including AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton. If the bill passes, it will be forwarded to Governor Gavin Newsom for final approval by the end of September.
