Tragedy Strikes Again: Third Suicide Attempt in One Week Disrupts Kolkata Metro Blue Line Services for 40 Minutes
Metro services in Kolkata faced significant disruptions on Tuesday following a tragic incident involving an attempted suicide on the tracks, marking the third such event within a week. The incident occurred at approximately 11:31 a.m., when a passenger jumped onto the tracks as a train was approaching. Details on the specific station where the event took place have yet to be announced.
This incident primarily affected the Blue Line, an essential transit route that connects the Dakshineswar and Garia areas, spanning the northern and southern fringes of the city. Commuters experienced delays for about 40 minutes, particularly between Dakshineswar and Sobhabazar stations. Normal operations resumed at 12:11 p.m., according to a spokesperson from Kolkata Metro.
The distressing event occurred just days after another suicide attempt disrupted services on the same line. On Saturday, a commuter attempted to take his life at Mahatma Gandhi Road Station, affecting service continuity between Belgachia and Park Street. The Kolkata Metro app issued an alert stating that, “Due to a suicide attempt at Mahatma Gandhi Road Station, Metro services on the Blue Line are currently available between Dakshineswar to Dum Dum Station and from Maidan to Shahid Khudiram station.” Although the individual was rescued from the tracks, he later died at Medical College Kolkata.
This incident followed another harrowing attempt on Thursday, when an elderly man jumped onto the tracks at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose station around 3:10 p.m. This tragic occurrence resulted in service disruptions lasting nearly an hour, with normal operations restored at 4:05 p.m. Unfortunately, the elderly man also succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, as confirmed by police reports.
These repeated incidents have raised concerns about safety and mental health among commuters in the Kolkata Metro system. The authorities emphasize the importance of mental health support and highlight available resources for individuals in distress.
Kolkata Metro officials continue to work on measures to improve safety across their network, stressing that passenger safety is their top priority. As these incidents draw attention not only to the struggles faced by individuals but also to the wider implications for the public transport system, the necessity for accessible mental health services becomes increasingly evident.
The city’s residents hope for a future where such tragic events become less common and for more robust systems to protect both commuters and those in crisis.
