Ensuring ST Status for Assam Tribes: Safeguards a Must, Says Hagrama Mohilary
Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Executive Member Hagrama Mohilary addressed reporters in Kokrajhar on November 25, expressing his support for the proposed inclusion of six Assam communities-Ahom, Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Moran, Matak, and Tai-Ahom-in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. However, he emphasized that this support hinges on the protection of the rights of existing tribal groups.
Mohilary stated that he is not against granting ST status to these communities, provided there are adequate constitutional safeguards in place for the current Scheduled Tribe population. He responded specifically to political concerns arising from Upper Assam, noting that the issues raised seem to be specific to that region. He pointed out that comments made by Three Gogoi, who suggested that the matter is primarily relevant to Upper Assam, do not accurately represent the context in Lower Assam. “I am not aware of the particular concerns in Upper Assam,” he remarked.
Additionally, Mohilary welcomed the recent decision by the Assam Cabinet, which allows areas governed by the Sixth Schedule, including the Bodoland Territorial Council, Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao, to remain exempt from restrictions on multiple marriages. This decision permits individuals in these autonomous regions to enter into multiple marriages if they so choose.
With a touch of humor, Mohilary noted that the residents of these three Sixth Schedule areas can now engage in multiple marriages without hesitation, following the government’s approval.
