Urgent Call for Action: Justice Gopala Gowda Voices Alarm Over Rising Pollution and Political Interference in Pollution Control Boards

Retired Supreme Court Judge V. Gopala Gowda has expressed grave concerns over escalating air and water pollution in India, along with the increasing political interference affecting the operations of statutory bodies like the Pollution Control Board (PCB). Speaking at a media conference on November 25, alongside renowned “Waterman of India” Rajendra Singh and prominent social activist Bolisetty Satyanarayana, Justice Gowda urged the public to be more vigilant in protecting vital natural resources, including rivers and forests, as a means to uphold human rights.

Justice Gowda highlighted the alarming trend of untreated effluents being discharged into the ocean, contaminating water sources and threatening the livelihoods of fishermen. He warned that such neglect contributes to serious health issues, including cancer. While he acknowledged ongoing efforts by courts and government entities, he emphasized the necessity for public cooperation in combating pollution. Despite the central government’s investment of crores in cleaning the Ganga, pollution levels remain a persistent issue across many rivers in the country. He also noted that, although there are PCBs in every state, some are lacking proper leadership, as state governments often neglect court mandates regarding the appointment of PCB chairpersons.

Rajendra Singh pointed out that corruption is a significant barrier to effective pollution control in India. He stressed the urgency of taking action against pollution and the reckless exploitation of natural resources. Reflecting on his five-decade-long campaign for pollution rejuvenation, he shared his achievement of revitalizing 23 rivers, emphasizing the crucial link between nature and cultural sustainability for a healthy nation. Singh lamented the rapid rise of certain industrialists who appear to disregard environmental regulations.

K. Pawan Kalyan, the Deputy Chief Minister also overseeing the environment portfolio, was criticized for his perceived inaction on these pressing issues. During the conference, Singh expressed condolences to Bolisetty Satyanarayana for the recent loss of his wife, Nagamani, mentioning their years of collaboration in championing pollution control, constitutional protection, and human rights.

Satyanarayana, acknowledging his profound personal loss, affirmed his commitment to intensifying environmental protection efforts, declaring he would be more available to the community than ever before. The collective messages from these advocates call for urgent public and governmental collaboration to address the multifaceted pollution crisis that threatens both health and the environment in India.

As environmental issues take center stage in public discourse, stakeholders are urged to unite in combating pollution, protecting natural resources, and ensuring a sustainable future for coming generations.
