Exciting Autumn Session of Assam Legislative Assembly Commences Today Under Unprecedented Security Measures
The Assam Legislative Assembly is set to begin its Autumn Session on Thursday, running until August 30, 2024, amidst heightened security in the Dispur area. This increased vigilance follows recent security threats, including the discovery of explosives at various locations, one notably near the Dispur Last Gate close to the Assembly premises, leading to bolstered safety measures.
The session will kick off with a one-hour Question Hour, allowing members to address urgent issues. Subsequently, the state government will present the Supplementary Demands for Grants for the 2024–25 fiscal year, detailing the additional financial requirements needed.
A significant aspect of this session is the planned introduction and discussion of 13 government bills, as communicated by the state government to the Assembly Secretariat. Among these bills is the Assam Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of Vacancies in Services and Posts) (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which aims to modify the reservation policies in government services.
Other important bills include the Assam (Temporarily Settled Areas) Tenancy (Amendment) Bill, 2024, intending to update tenancy regulations; the Assam Skill University (Amendment) Bill, 2024, focused on improving educational infrastructure; and the Assam Police (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which proposes revisions to the current police framework.
Additionally, the session will see the introduction of the Assam Muslim Marriage Registration (Compulsory) Bill, 2024, and the Assam Urban Water Bodies (Prevention & Conservation) Bill, 2024, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing social issues and environmental conservation.
In tandem with legislative activities, the security measures underscore the state’s preparedness to ensure a safe and productive session. With an array of legislative reforms on the table, the Autumn Session promises to be a pivotal period for Assam’s governance and policy-making.
