Tragic Explosion at Nowgam Police Station Leaves Nine Dead, Many Injured
At least nine people were killed and several others injured in a devastating explosion at Nowgam Police Station on Friday, November 14. The blast occurred while authorities were investigating explosives linked to the Faridabad terror module case, raising concerns about public safety.
Eyewitnesses reported that flames and thick smoke engulfed the station, while CCTV footage captured debris scattered across a wide area. Officials have warned that the death toll may rise, as some of the injured are in critical condition and others remain unaccounted for. Investigators found body parts located as far as 300 feet from the explosion site.
Police are currently exploring two scenarios: either an accidental detonation of ammonium nitrate during handling or a deliberate terror attack. The explosives involved, weighing about 350 kg, were previously confiscated from the rented residence of Dr. Muzammil Shakeel Ganaie in Faridabad. Security forces are continuing to search the area, and Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, has visited the injured in the hospital.
Authorities are also investigating potential connections between the Nowgam explosion and a recent car explosion at the Red Fort in Delhi, which resulted in 13 deaths and multiple injuries. Dr. Umar Nabi, allegedly the driver in that incident, may have acted following recent confiscations of bomb-making materials.
The investigation began after threatening posters appeared in Nowgam in mid-October. Subsequent CCTV footage led to the arrest of three locals, whose questioning implicated Maulvi Irfan Ahmad, a former paramedic turned preacher accused of radicalizing healthcare professionals. The probe expanded to Al-Falah University in Faridabad, where Drs. Muzammil Ganaie and Shaheen Sayeed were apprehended. Authorities have seized substantial quantities of ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, sulfur, and 2,900 kg of explosives linked to a suspect in the Pulwama case.
In the aftermath of the explosion, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, conducted a comprehensive security review across the Union Territory. This tragic incident has intensified efforts to determine if the blasts in Nowgam and at the Red Fort were part of a coordinated attack.
