Tragic Fate: Haryana Youth’s Dream to US Ends in Death After Paying 40-50 Lakh to Agent in Guatemala
An 18-year-old from Haryana has tragically lost his life in Guatemala after being allegedly held captive by human traffickers while attempting to reach the United States through the illegal “dunki” route, his family reported on Saturday. The young man, identified as Yuvraj, hails from Mohna village in Kaithal district and left home last October, hoping to find work in the U.S.
Yuvraj’s family described his aspirations, noting that he had completed his Class 12 education and wanted to support them financially. His maternal uncle, Gurpej Singh, explained to PTI that they were reassured he would arrive safely to the U.S., thanks to a network of contacts.
The family’s nightmare began when they lost contact with Yuvraj shortly after he started his journey. According to Gurpej Singh, three travel agents based in Haryana had accepted significant sums of money from them, promising a secure passage for Yuvraj. The family’s concerns deepened as months passed without any updates. Subsequently, they received distressing videos showing Yuvraj and another youth from Punjab held hostage in Guatemala, accompanied by ransom demands from their captors.
The situation escalated when one of the traffickers reached out, claiming Yuvraj had been killed and demanding ₹3 lakh to provide proof of his death. After making this payment, the family received a death certificate and disturbing photos, causing unimaginable grief and helplessness. Gurpej Singh stated that they suspect the funds they sent through local agents never reached the traffickers, highlighting the widespread issue of exploitation within this dangerous network.
Reports indicate that the family spent an estimated ₹40 to ₹50 lakh in total, not only to the travel agents but also to the traffickers. In their search for answers and justice, the family had approached the police, resulting initially in the arrest of two local agents. However, they later received the heartbreaking news of Yuvraj’s death.
The “dunki” route has gained notoriety as a perilous means for individuals from Haryana, Punjab, and other states seeking to illegally enter the U.S. Due to the high risk involved, many migrants have faced severe abuse, and countless others have been deported after attempting the journey. The grim fate of Yuvraj serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with human trafficking and illegal immigration, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and preventive measures.
This tragic incident underscores the serious issues surrounding human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals pursuing a better life. Families like Yuvraj’s are left shattered, mourning not just for lost loved ones but also battling the overwhelming sense of betrayal by those who promised a brighter future.
