Wondering About the 8th Pay Commission? Discover How Long You’ll Wait!

The Union Cabinet has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission, but central government employees and pensioners might have to wait as long as three years to see its benefits. This new pay panel will function under the leadership of Justice Ranjan Prakash Desai, following the approval of its Terms of Reference (ToR).

The commission has been allocated 18 months to complete its work, indicating that its report is likely to be submitted to the government by April 2027. However, according to the Financial Express, those hoping for quick implementation of the commission’s recommendations may need to exercise patience. Based on past experiences with the previous pay commissions, the process could extend into 2028.

The 6th Pay Commission was introduced in July 2006 during the UPA-1 government. It was officially constituted in October of the same year, with its ToR approved shortly thereafter. The commission submitted its report in March 2008, about 18 months post-formation. The UPA-1 Cabinet approved the report in August 2008, resulting in a total timeline of approximately 22 months from the initial ToR approval to the cabinet’s endorsement, with its recommendations effecting from January 1, 2006.

Similarly, the 7th Pay Commission was instituted in September 2013, also under UPA-2. The Union Cabinet approved its ToR in February 2014, with the report presented in November 2015. The approval of its recommendations came in June 2016, amounting to roughly 28 months from the ToR to final implementation, effective from January 1, 2016.

As for the 8th Pay Commission, given historical timeframes, it is anticipated that the approval by the Cabinet may not occur before 2028. Even under optimal conditions, the timeline could extend until late 2027 or early 2028. Notably, there have already been substantial delays in the commission’s establishment. Initially announced on January 16, 2025, the ToR took over nine months to be approved, finally receiving confirmation on October 28, 2025. With the approved timeline, the commission is set to conduct its review and submit its report, expected around April 2027.
