Sikkim CM Champions Nepali Language Revival on Nepali Bhasa Manyata Diwas: A Heartfelt Commitment to Our Heritage
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang took a significant step in promoting the Nepali language during his address on Nepali Bhasa Manyata Diwas, an annual event celebrating its recognition in India. In an effort to elevate Nepali’s status, he announced that henceforth, all government notifications and advertisements will be issued in Nepali.
Tamang pointed out the lack of such notifications in the past, despite Nepali’s constitutional recognition, and emphasized the importance of supporting other local languages like Gurung, Rai, Tamang, Bhutia, and Lepcha. Among his educational initiatives, Tamang stated that Nepali dictionaries will be distributed to students and schools will be encouraged to integrate Nepali language studies into their curricula. He also mandated that every school should have a weekly traditional dress day to foster cultural ties.
Private universities will soon be required to offer Nepali courses, with a notification on this forthcoming. Marking the 50th anniversary of Nepali Bhasa Manyata Diwas in August 2025, the government plans grand celebrations involving educational institutions to highlight the language’s significance.
In addition, Tamang announced a Rs 10 lakh grant from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Fund to the Nepali Sahitya Parishad to support activities leading up to the anniversary. He paid tribute to key figures like Ananda Singh Thapa, Nar Bahadur Bhandari, and Dil Kumari Bhandari for their role in achieving constitutional recognition for Nepali, calling it a proud moment for Nepali-speaking communities globally.
Tamang concluded by reaffirming his government’s dedication to advancing the Nepali language and culture, asserting the importance of collective responsibility in protecting and promoting it. The day’s events, held at Manan Bhawan in Gangtok, included awarding the Kanchenjunga Mitrasen Smriti Award to musician Basant Chettri for his contributions to Nepali culture.
“Our language is our pride,” Tamang stated, urging everyone to unite for the prominence and progress of Nepali.
