Elon Musk Celebrates Starlink’s Historic Milestone: 10,000 Satellites Revolutionizing Connectivity
Elon Musk praised the achievements of SpaceX’s Starlink on Monday after the satellite internet service celebrated a significant milestone: the launch of its 10,000th satellite. This milestone was reached on October 19, when a Falcon 9 rocket successfully lifted off from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base, carrying 28 Starlink satellites into orbit. The launch marks SpaceX’s 132nd Falcon 9 flight of 2025, matching last year’s record with more than two months remaining in the year.
“Congrats, Starlink and Falcon teams, on building and launching 10k satellites! SpaceX now has several times more satellites in orbit than all others combined,” Musk announced via his social media platform X. Following Musk’s statement, Starlink highlighted its achievement, stating, “SpaceX has now launched more than 10,000 Starlink satellites to date, enabling reliable high-speed internet for millions of people all around the world.”
Starlink’s network, which began its journey in 2018 with the launch of two prototype satellites, Tintin A and Tintin B, has rapidly expanded to serve millions globally. Currently, over 8,000 of these satellites are operational. This innovative service utilizes a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites to provide internet connectivity, particularly beneficial in remote areas and conflict zones. With approvals for deploying up to 12,000 satellites, Starlink has ambitious plans to expand its network further, aiming for over 30,000 satellites in total. The service is currently available in more than 150 countries and territories, including recent approval for operations in India.
In addition to the satellite milestone, SpaceX recently conducted the 11th test flight of its Starship rocket on October 13. Launching from the company’s Starbase facility in Texas, the Starship flew for over an hour before successfully splashing down in the Indian Ocean. This test followed the Starship Flight 10’s successful “soft landing” and splashdown in August, marking a significant turnaround for the spacecraft after earlier failures this year.
With Starship, SpaceX aims to establish a permanent human presence on Mars, reflecting Musk’s vision of interplanetary exploration. NASA has also selected Starship as the lunar lander for its upcoming Artemis 3 mission, which seeks to land astronauts on the Moon for the first time since the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s. This collaboration underscores Starship’s critical role in the future of space exploration.
As SpaceX continues to lead the charge in satellite internet services and advanced rocket technology, the implications for global connectivity and exploration are profound. The success of Starlink not only demonstrates the potential of satellite communication but also reinforces the growing importance of innovative solutions in bridging connectivity gaps across the globe. With a strong commitment to technology and exploration, Musk and SpaceX are steadfastly advancing the boundaries of what’s possible in space.
This evolving narrative of SpaceX’s ambitious projects underscores a transformative era in the aerospace industry, setting the stage for future advancements in internet service and interplanetary travel.
