With only 160 reported cases so far, the Tricity has achieved its lowest dengue case count in four years, according to official statistics. This marks an impressive decline of 94.96% from the 3,173 cases recorded last year. Breaking it down by region, Chandigarh has reported just five cases, while Panchkula has 62 and Mohali 93. For context, in 2022, the numbers were significantly higher: 349 cases in Chandigarh, 1,324 in Panchkula, and 1,500 in Mohali.
Dengue fever, transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito that thrives in stagnant water, typically sees a surge during the monsoon and post-monsoon periods. This year, however, despite receiving more rainfall-over 836 mm from June to September compared to last year’s 776.2 mm-the incidence of dengue has remained remarkably low.
Dr. PVM Laxmi, a professor in community medicine and public health at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, explained that dengue often exhibits cyclical trends, with outbreaks recurring every few years due to variations in immunity and the behavior of mosquito populations. “Individuals infected in previous years tend to develop immunity, which generally results in fewer cases in subsequent years,” Dr. Laxmi noted.
Additional factors contributing to the decreased dengue case count may include improved drainage systems and proactive measures taken by local authorities to curb the spread of the disease. Dr. Sanjay D Cruz, head of general medicine at Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, emphasized the importance of preventing water stagnation around homes to further mitigate mosquito breeding. Common breeding sites include water coolers, flower pots, uncovered buckets and drums, discarded tires, and open water tanks.
As health officials continue to monitor the situation, maintaining public awareness remains crucial. Local residents are urged to take preventive actions to ensure that areas around their homes are free of stagnant water, which poses a risk for dengue outbreaks.
