The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has seized assets worth several crores from an Executive Director and Regional Officer of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) in Guwahati. This arrest, made earlier this week, is linked to allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh. The officer was detained on October 14 while reportedly receiving this bribe from a private individual.
The official is accused of soliciting illegal payments in exchange for favorable decisions on time extensions and issuance of completion certificates for NHIDCL’s highway projects in Assam, notably including the expansion of National Highway 37 between Demow and Moran Bypass. Following the arrest, the CBI conducted raids at multiple locations associated with the officer in Guwahati, Ghaziabad, and Imphal. These operations resulted in the recovery of Rs 2.62 crore in cash, alongside documents indicating substantial investments in real estate and luxury items.
According to officials, the assets seized consist of nine premium apartments, one office space, and three residential plots in Delhi NCR, in addition to an apartment and a plot in Bengaluru, and four apartments with two residential plots in Guwahati. Investigators also discovered paperwork for two homestead plots and one agricultural parcel in Imphal West. Furthermore, the CBI found records detailing six high-end vehicles, two luxury watches valued in lakhs, and a 100-gram silver bar. Many of the properties appear to be undervalued and are currently undergoing verification.
The case was prompted by information received about the NHIDCL official and two representatives from a private firm. Both the arrested executive and one private individual have been brought before the Special Judge at the CBI Court in Guwahati and have been remanded to three days of police custody.
