The Road Transport and Highways Ministry has announced the implementation of a Vehicle Location Tracking (VLT) system in Meghalaya. This system will feature the AIS-140 Vehicle Location Tracking Device, which aims to enhance public transport safety and efficiency. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to integrating advanced technology for transport management, including a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to govern its operation.
The new SOP will include essential safety features such as a panic button, enabling immediate assistance for users in distress. The Department of Transport in Meghalaya will oversee the deployment of this VLT system, particularly for buses, ensuring that all operational vehicles are equipped with the new tracking technology.
The project is being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEiTY) and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), which is responsible for the software application linked to the tracking devices.
To ensure effective monitoring, a Control Centre has been established in Shillong under the Transport Commissioner’s Office. This initiative is expected to significantly improve the tracking and management of buses operating within the state, promoting safer travel for residents and visitors alike.
