Dimapur Candlelight March and Supreme Court’s Action on Kolkata Medical College Rape Case
On Sunday, around 800 people joined a candlelight march organized by the Dimapur Bengali Students Union (DBSU) to honor the rape victim from RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. The procession started at Ramthakur Sevashram in Railway Colony and concluded at Kalibari Road. DBSU President, Dipankar Sarkar, voiced his condemnation of the crime, called for justice, and advocated for stricter laws. The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU), Gorkha Students’ Union Dimapur, Dimapur Bengali Samaj, and the Nagaland Medical Dealers Association (NMDA) were also part of the march.
Meanwhile, in New Delhi, the Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the same Kolkata medical college. According to the Supreme Court’s cause list, a three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will address the “Alleged rape and murder incident of a trainee doctor in R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, and related issues” on Tuesday.
Monica Singh, a doctor by profession, along with her advocate Satyam Singh, had filed a letter petition to the Chief Justice, urging the apex court to conduct an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident. The petition also requested the court to issue directives to enhance security measures at medical colleges and hospitals nationwide, thus preventing such heinous incidents in the future.
The plea emphasized that the attack was not an isolated event but a direct assault on the nation’s healthcare system, undermining the safety of professionals devoted to public service. The letter highlighted the particular vulnerabilities faced by women in the healthcare sector, advocating for special attention to ensure their safety.
The Supreme Court’s decisive action is crucial to restoring faith in the rule of law and ensuring the uninterrupted functioning of medical institutions across India.
