Meghalaya’s Riiohlang Dhar Triumphantly Chosen to Officiate FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup
Riiohlang Dhar, a 34-year-old assistant referee from Meghalaya, has been selected to officiate at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held in the Dominican Republic from October 10 to November 3, 2024. Dhar’s selection is a notable achievement as she becomes only the second Indian woman to reach this prestigious referee position, following Uvena Fernandes, who officiated in the 2016 edition in Jordan.
Expressing her excitement, Dhar remarked, “This is a great honor. I have to work harder to live up to FIFA’s expectations. I will also keep in mind that I will be there as a representative of India. I will do everything to keep India’s flag high.”
Her rise in the officiating world has been swift and impressive. Dhar embarked on her refereeing journey in 2009 after concluding her career as a player and has since officiated at numerous international tournaments. Despite her extensive experience, she views the World Cup as a unique and significant challenge.
K Sankar, Chairperson of the AIFF Referees’ Committee, highlighted Dhar’s exceptional performance in recent AFC matches as a critical factor in her selection. AIFF Acting Secretary General M Satyanarayan celebrated her appointment as an “Independence Day gift,” and a boost for women officials in India.
As a member of the Meghalaya police and an active referee, Dhar received immense backing from her state association, the AIFF, and her employers. She acknowledged their support, stating, “We have all greatly benefited from their tremendous work.”
This milestone not only highlights Dhar’s personal achievements but also signifies progress for Indian women in the global football refereeing arena. Her journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring referees and underscores the AIFF’s commitment to developing women officials in the sport.
