Sikkim Celebrates Heart Health: A Legacy of Cardiac Care Excellence
On September 29, 2025, Sikkim celebrated World Heart Day, marking a decade of transformative cardiac care spearheaded by Dr. D.P. Rai. The day served as a reminder of the significant strides made in cardiac health within the state, embracing this year’s theme, “Don’t Miss a Beat.” This resonates with Sikkim’s commitment to effectively reach out to and treat thousands of cardiac patients.
Since the establishment of STNM Hospital in Gangtok in 2019, more than 4,000 successful cardiac and vascular interventions have taken place. This state-run multi-specialty hospital has emerged as a beacon of advanced cardiac care, not only serving Sikkim but also attracting patients from North Bengal and neighboring states. The influx of patients from outside Sikkim is boosting the region’s reputation in medical and wellness tourism.
Dr. D.P. Rai, the head of the cardiology department at STNM Hospital, expressed gratitude towards Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay and the state government for their unwavering support. He is renowned for positioning Sikkim as a regional hub for cardiac care, dedicating ten years to saving lives. His team has treated countless patients, many of whom were on the verge of death.
After joining the hospital in 2019, Dr. Rai worked alongside a skilled team including Dr. Palden Wangchuk Bhutia and Dr. Gyalden Norbu. Their efforts have established the Department of Cardiology as a center of excellence, equipped with cutting-edge technology for cardiac procedures. The hospital boasts one of the highest recovery rates in the region for critical conditions such as heart attacks and cardiac arrest.
Patients frequently express their appreciation for Dr. Rai and his team, emphasizing their commitment to serving Sikkim over more lucrative opportunities in metropolitan hospitals. His dedication has not only transformed individual lives but also positioned Sikkim as a medical tourism hub, generating goodwill and improving health outcomes.
On this World Heart Day, patients conveyed their gratitude for Dr. Rai’s service, highlighting how his vision has inspired healthcare professionals across the region. In turn, Dr. Rai thanked the Chief Minister and everyone involved in the hospital, emphasizing the collective effort that has led to this progress.
He expressed, “To earn the love, respect, and trust of the people of Sikkim is priceless. I remain committed to further strengthening cardiac healthcare in our State.” This commitment is also reflected in recent accolades; in 2023, Dr. Rai received the Sikkim Sewa Samman, one of the state’s highest civilian awards, recognizing his extraordinary contributions.
Originally from Bull-Singtam in South Sikkim, Dr. Rai has no regrets about prioritizing local service over more financially rewarding roles elsewhere. He firmly believes in his ethical responsibility to serve his home state, stating, “Sikkim would have been deprived of my service had I opted to work outside. I don’t regret this.”
