Trump’s Bold Cartoon Showdown: Firing Powell and Igniting Economic Turmoil!

By adminitfy
September 28, 2025 2 Min Read

U.S. President Donald Trump stirred controversy over the weekend by sharing a cartoon image of himself on Truth Social, depicting him firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. The image shows Trump pointing and exclaiming, “YOU’RE FIRED!” as Powell carries a box of personal belongings, with the Federal Reserve seal prominently displayed behind them. Visual analysis indicated that the image may be AI-generated or digitally illustrated.

This latest provocation is part of Trump’s ongoing criticism of Powell, whom he has labeled “Too Late Powell” for his cautious approach to interest rate cuts. Despite the Federal Reserve’s recent decision to lower rates for the first time this year, Trump’s jabs at Powell have continued, raising concerns about the potential for unprecedented presidential intervention at the Federal Reserve. Powell’s term as chair is set to conclude in May 2026.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment from CNBC. Historically, no U.S. president has attempted to remove a sitting Fed chair, although past leaders have certainly expressed their criticisms. A recent Supreme Court ruling clarified that the president does not possess the unilateral authority to dismiss Federal Reserve officials, a sentiment echoed by Powell, who has stated that his potential firing “is not permitted under the law.”

In light of ongoing renovations at the Fed’s Washington headquarters, the Trump administration has been vocal about criticizing Powell. This has led to speculation that Trump might seek to justify Powell’s removal. Despite a slight softening of Trump’s rhetoric regarding the Fed building, he remains adamant that Powell’s policies have adversely impacted the economy by keeping rates too high.

Adding to the drama, Trump attempted to oust Fed Governor Lisa Cook in August, citing alleged mortgage fraud. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on this matter soon. The Department of Justice has recently stated in a Supreme Court filing that dismissing Cook for alleged misconduct would not disrupt financial markets. However, Cook’s attorneys have argued that such an action could threaten the independence of the Federal Reserve.

While Trump’s threats regarding Powell and Cook generate headlines, financial markets have shown minimal reaction thus far. Many economists and investors express concern that firing Powell before the end of his term could lead to rising long-term interest rates. This conjecture stems from fears that the Fed might begin prioritizing Trump’s interests over its dual mandate from Congress, which emphasizes maintaining stable inflation and low unemployment rates.

As the political drama continues to unfold, the implications for the Federal Reserve’s independence and the broader economy remain significant. Trump’s approach raises critical questions about the future of monetary policy and the delicate balance of power between the presidency and the nation’s central bank. Will his threats translate into action, or will they remain just a part of the ongoing political discourse? Only time will tell.
