Guwahati, Sept 23: The second post-mortem examination of cultural icon Zubeen Garg was conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) early Tuesday morning, as Assam prepared for the final rites of one of its most cherished figures. The musician’s body arrived at GMCH around 6:50 AM, where a special panel of four doctors conducted the autopsy. This team comprised experts from Gauhati Medical College, Pragjyotishpur Medical College, and specialists from AIIMS, ensuring thorough medical evaluation.
Senior officials from the state and district administration, as well as representatives from Assam Police and the health department, were present during the procedure. Among the first to pay respects was Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who laid floral tributes before the body was taken to the hospital. On social media, the Chief Minister expressed, “The last two days have symbolised the love and affection Zubeen commanded over the people of Assam. There will never be another Zubeen.”
After the completion of the second autopsy, the body was taken back to Sarusajai Stadium before it was transported directly to Kamarakuchi in Sonapur for the final rites. A special ambulance, akin to the one that originally transported the body from the airport, was arranged for this journey. This ambulance will be closely followed by family members of Garg, while thousands of mourners are expected to line the route as a final farewell.
Preparations for the cremation at Kamarakuchi have been finalized. The rites will be conducted by priests Tushar Bhagawati and Pankal Sharma, with Garg’s sister, Pami Borthakur, playing a prominent role, alongside Arun Garg and Rahul Gautam Sharma. Over the past two days, an extraordinary outpouring of grief has been witnessed across Assam, as both ordinary citizens and fellow artists have gathered en masse to honor the legacy of a man whose voice and artistry shaped a generation.
As the controlled procession prepares to make its way to the samadhikhetra, Assam is set for an emotional goodbye to Zubeen Garg-an artist whose voice will resonate in the collective memory of the state for years to come.
