Assam Mourns: Guwahati Honors Zubeen Garg in Heartfelt Tribute
The unexpected passing of Zubeen Garg, Assam’s cherished cultural icon, has cast a shadow over the state, prompting a wave of mourning among its residents. On Saturday, September 20, Guwahati felt an overwhelming sense of loss as many businesses closed their doors in an unofficial tribute to the beloved artist.
Throughout the city, from Six Mile to Ganeshguri and Hatigaon, shops remained shuttered, with only pharmacies keeping their lights on. Streets that usually buzz with life fell silent, transforming into a communal homage to Garg, whose voice resonated deeply with generations.
The sorrow felt in Guwahati echoed across Upper Assam and Silchar, where life came to a halt as people reflected on Zubeen’s extraordinary legacy and impact on the region’s culture.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Zubeen Garg’s remains will arrive in Assam the following morning. After reaching Delhi later that evening, his body will be flown to Guwahati, where it will first be taken to his residence in Kahilipara between 6 and 7 AM for a final family farewell. Subsequently, his body will be laid out at Sarusajai Stadium, allowing the public to pay their last respects.
Authorities have indicated that the duration for tributes at the stadium will be determined by medical advice.
For Assam, the stillness in its streets speaks volumes-this loss transcends that of a singer; it marks the departure of a vital heartbeat of the community.
