Urgent Action Needed: Telangana Food Safety Task Force Exposes Alarming Unhygienic Conditions in Hyderabad Government Hospital Kitchens!
The Telangana Food Safety Task Force has uncovered significant hygiene issues during routine inspections at key government hospitals in Hyderabad, raising concerns over food safety standards in dietary kitchens. Inspections were conducted at the Government Maternity Hospital in Sultan Bazar, Government ENT Hospital in Koti, and Area Hospital in Nampally.
At the Government Maternity Hospital, managed by contractor M/s Katikam Linga Reddy, inspectors identified numerous violations. These included open waste bins and the storage of rice bags and raw vegetables directly on the floor, creating an unsanitary environment. Alarmingly, the staff lacked water quality test reports and mandatory Food Safety Training (FoSTaC), with food handlers observed working without proper caps or aprons.
The situation was similarly troubling at the Area Hospital in Nampally, operated by M/s Shiva Sai Manpower Services. Here, inspectors reported unclean floors, rusty racks, and greasy exhaust systems, alongside damp walls and damaged window meshes-conditions that could lead to serious health risks for patients.
The Government ENT Hospital in Koti, managed by M/s Boini Shiva Kumar, exhibited its own set of issues. The team discovered drainage overflow and potential pest entry, as well as greasy exhaust systems and a lack of separate storage for raw ingredients, all contributing to a hazardous environment.
In response to these findings, the Food Safety Task Force issued notices to the contractors overseeing the kitchens and instructed the superintendents of the hospitals to implement immediate corrective measures. The overall situation underscores a critical need for improved hygiene practices and compliance with food safety standards within these facilities, vital for ensuring patient health and safety.
As communities increasingly prioritize health and cleanliness, it is imperative that government institutions uphold these standards diligently. The health department is now under pressure to monitor these conditions closely, ensuring that corrective measures are swiftly enacted and maintained.
Reports like these highlight the critical importance of regular inspections and proper training within food service operations in healthcare settings. As the situation unfolds, further scrutiny from health officials and advocacy groups may be anticipated, ensuring that food safety remains a top priority in Hyderabad’s public hospitals.
