Record 1,66,746 Students Join Engineering Courses in Maharashtra-36,000 Seats Vacant!

As admissions to engineering courses in Maharashtra concluded, 166,746 out of a total of 202,883 seats were filled, leaving over 36,000 vacancies. Though this year’s admissions have increased from last year’s 149,078, the rise in overall capacity has led to a slightly higher number of vacant seats compared to the previous year’s 31,092.

New-age engineering fields, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and data science, continue to attract a significant number of candidates. In contrast, traditional engineering branches like civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering have seen lower admissions, with computer engineering standing out as a strong performer.

This year has also shown a positive trend in gender balance among admissions. A total of 104,550 boys and 62,196 girls were admitted, compared to 96,326 boys and 52,751 girls last year. While boys still make up the majority, their share of total admissions rose from 35.38% to 37.30%.

The Centralized Admission Process (CAP) conducted by the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell wrapped up on September 5, with the institute-level rounds concluding late on Monday. Initially, more than 60,000 seats-almost 30% of the total-remained unfilled after four rounds of CAP. However, following the institute-level rounds, over half of those vacant seats were filled.

A CET Cell official noted that students often wait for the institution-level rounds to secure seats in their preferred branches or colleges. Many choose to cancel their CAP-confirmed admissions if they secure a preferred seat during this phase, leading to a trend of reshuffling. This pattern was also observed last year, where significant vacancies at the end of CAP were largely filled in subsequent institution-level rounds.

According to CET Cell data, specialized computer science courses such as AI, Data Science, Cyber Security, Internet of Things, and Blockchain Technology reported over 90% occupancy, despite having fewer seats. Traditional courses in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, which offer a larger number of seats, saw a filling rate of over 80%. Other branches like Electronics and Telecommunication, Information Technology, Automation and Robotics, and Chemical Engineering also recorded more than 80% admissions. Meanwhile, traditional branches like Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering achieved over 70% admissions.

The demand for various branches reflects current industry needs. Engineering college principals indicate that candidates are increasingly favoring fields with better job prospects, as traditional engineering areas face limited opportunities while new-age sectors are evolving rapidly.

Region-wise, Pune led the admissions with 70,251, consistent with last year’s figures, mainly due to its greater availability of engineering seats. The Mumbai region followed in second with 31,930 admissions, a slight increase from last year’s 29,048. In contrast, the Amravati region recorded the lowest admissions at 7,996, reflecting its limited intake capacity.
