Heightened Security Measures in Imphal, Churachandpur Ahead of PM Modi’s Visit
Imphal, Sept 12: In anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on Friday, Imphal and Churachandpur are under tight security measures, with Special Protection Group (SPG) personnel collaborating with state authorities for a comprehensive security drill. The historic Kangla Fort, the venue for the Prime Minister’s address, has been fully cordoned off, barring any visitors. SPG teams are actively monitoring the situation in both Imphal and Churachandpur.
The Imphal West Police have outlined a set of guidelines for citizens attending the event at Kangla. Security has tightened significantly, with frisking and identity checks ramped up at critical locations, including the busy Sanjenthong bridge linking Imphal East and West. Sniffer dogs and metal detectors are in use at the airport and other entry points, accompanied by regular patrols.
Within a 5-kilometre radius of Kangla, combing operations and multiple security checks are ongoing. Notable deployment is seen at key locations such as Andro Parking, the four entrances of Kangla, Keisampat near the BJP headquarters, and the Khwairamband Keithel market area.
Special security measures are also in place in Churachandpur, particularly following reports of clashes in the district on Wednesday. However, as of Thursday night, officials confirmed that no new incidents of violence had been recorded.
Traffic management in central Imphal has been modified to ensure smooth movement for VIPs and to control crowds effectively. Diversions are being established to avoid congestion near Kangla and other important sites.
The weather presents an added challenge, with intermittent rain and overcast skies since Thursday evening potentially impacting visibility and monitoring efforts. Despite these conditions, state government officials remain committed to achieving a high turnout.
Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel and BJP’s northeast in-charge Sambit Patra have urged the public to come out in large numbers for the Prime Minister’s address. With the SPG, state police, and central forces working in concert, officials express confidence in their ability to prevent any incidents during this high-profile visit.
