AJP Condemns Centre’s ‘Genocidal’ Immigration Order: Urgent Action Needed
Guwahati: Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) President Lurinjyoti Gogoi declared on Sunday that the Assamese community will not bear the burden of illegal immigrants, pledging a relentless fight against the central government’s “genocidal, anti-Assam” Immigration and Foreigners (Exemption) Order, 2025. During a rally with supporters, Gogoi condemned the order as a deliberate attempt to undermine Assamese identity. He asserted, “We will not accept this under any circumstances,” and promised to escalate protests to safeguard the nation.
The AJP’s state unit has initiated widespread demonstrations reminiscent of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movements of 2019. The recently issued order by the Ministry of Home Affairs on September 1, 2025, exempts certain persecuted minorities-including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan-who entered India by December 31, 2024, from passport requirements for entry, stay, or exit.
Critics argue that this order effectively extends the Citizenship Amendment Act’s cut-off date from 2014 by ten years, which conflicts with the 1985 Assam Accord’s March 24, 1971, deadline for deporting illegal migrants. This has worsened Assam’s prolonged immigration crisis, with demographic changes reducing the proportion of Assamese speakers to 48% of the population, as noted in the 2011 Census.
On September 3, AJP activists in Guwahati publicly opposed the new regulation by tearing and burning copies of it, labeling it the “biggest crime” against indigenous populations. Gogoi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in vote-bank politics and criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for inconsistent stances on the issue. Supporting groups like the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Congress have also organized actions, with AASU planning effigy burnings across districts and Congress marking September 1 as a “black day” for Assam.
In response, Sarma asserted that the CAA has had minimal impact, claiming that only 12 applications have been processed since 2024. As protests intensify, Gogoi’s rallying cry, “Hail AJP, Hail All Assam,” signals a renewed commitment to protecting cultural heritage against the backdrop of a looming 53-year burden of immigration.
