Bold Warning: Ex-NSA John Bolton Slams Trump, Claims White House Tactics Drive Modi Towards Russia and China Amid Tariff Turmoil!
Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has once again criticized former President Donald Trump, arguing that his actions have driven Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi closer to Russia and China. This criticism comes in light of new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, which, according to Bolton, have regressed US-India relations by decades.
“When it comes to US-India relations, the White House has taken a step backward, pushing Modi closer to both Russia and China,” Bolton remarked in a post on social media platform X. His comments reflect growing tensions between New Delhi and Washington as a result of tariffs levied on Indian imports, which are now around 50 percent.
Bolton strongly condemned Trump’s tariff policy, asserting it has “shredded” decades of efforts to shift India’s alignment away from its Cold War ties with the Soviet Union and address the escalating threat posed by China. In a series of posts, he highlighted how Trump’s economic decisions have jeopardized strategic advancements, allowing Chinese President Xi Jinping to reshape the geopolitical landscape.
“The West has invested years in encouraging India to distance itself from its Cold War connection with the Soviet Union and to recognize the dangers from China. Trump’s disastrous tariff policy has undone those efforts,” Bolton asserted.
Historically, India and the US have enjoyed a robust partnership, characterized by extensive diplomatic and economic cooperation. In 2024, trade in goods and services between the two nations reached $186 billion, with India enjoying a surplus of $41 billion. Despite Trump’s claims of India being a “good friend,” recent tariff measures have strained relations. These new tariffs took effect on August 27, raising the burdens on Indian goods substantially.
Moreover, Bolton mentioned that Trump’s reluctance to consider broader diplomatic negotiations has created an opportunity for Xi to recalibrate the dynamics of East Asian politics. Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security adviser from 2018 to 2019 before resigning over foreign policy disagreements, echoes concerns about the long-term implications of Trump’s approach.
His remarks come shortly after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, where Modi engaged in discussions with Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. During these meetings, Modi emphasized the enduring nature of Indo-Russian ties, asserting that both nations have consistently supported each other even during trying times. The Ministry of External Affairs reported that Modi and Xi acknowledged the critical roles of their economies in stabilizing global trade.
As India navigates a complex geopolitical landscape, analysts worry that the erosion of US-India relations could have lasting consequences. Bolton’s statements underscore the impact of tariff disputes and suggest that a reevaluation of diplomatic strategies may be necessary.
In summary, as the United States grapples with its foreign policy direction, the health of its relationship with India hangs in the balance, raising questions about future alliances in a rapidly changing global order.
