Reviving Heritage: Sikkim’s Bhutia Folk Literature Workshop for Preservation
A three-day workshop focused on documenting and preserving Bhutia folk literature wrapped up on Wednesday at Bhutia House in Makhim. The event, held from September 2 to 4, gathered esteemed scholars, educators, and cultural experts to devise a structured plan for compiling and translating Bhutia’s oral traditions.
Organized jointly by the Central Institute of Hindi in Agra and Bhutia experts from Sikkim, the workshop featured notable participants, including Dr. Namdol Bhutia from Tadong College, Dr. Chuki Lepcha from the Government of Sikkim, and Dr. Sonam Ongmu Bhutia, among others.
Program coordinator Dr. Chukey Bhutia underscored the importance of the Bhutia community’s oral stories, songs, and cultural expressions as integral elements of Sikkim’s heritage. He emphasized that systematic documentation is essential for preserving these traditions for future generations.
The opening day was dedicated to pinpointing key themes and materials within the folk literature. Later sessions involved drafting outlines, translating selected works, and developing strategies for a comprehensive compilation process.
During the closing session, Dr. Namdol Bhutia, serving as the project’s editor, urged participants to promptly finalize their contributions, stressing that the project’s success hinges on timely collaboration.
Once completed, the compilation is expected to serve as a significant resource for researchers and will help ensure that Bhutia folk knowledge is preserved in written form.
