Strong Earthquake Shakes Afghanistan Again, Regions of India Tremble
An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan on Thursday, causing significant concern. However, Reuters reports that the German Research Centre for Geosciences has recorded it at a magnitude of 6.2. The tremors were so powerful that they were felt across regions in Jammu and Kashmir as well as Delhi-NCR.
This latest earthquake occurred just days after two major quakes in northern Afghanistan that claimed over 2,200 lives and caused widespread devastation. The Afghan government indicated that the earthquake struck at a depth of 160 kilometers in Nangarhar and its surrounding areas at approximately 10:26 PM.
According to the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, the quake was located at coordinates 34.58 N latitude and 70.66 E longitude. The aftermath of these earthquakes has left a profound impact, with the death toll exceeding 2,200 and around 3,640 individuals injured. Many have been rendered homeless and face uncertain futures.
Rescue workers worked tirelessly on Thursday, recovering bodies from the ruins of demolished homes, as search operations continued without pause. A local resident, Aalem Jan from Kunar province, expressed the desperation of those affected, saying, “Everything we had has been destroyed,” and lamented that they now possess only the clothes on their backs.
India has responded by delivering 21 tonnes of relief supplies to aid the earthquake-affected population in Afghanistan. The aid package includes blankets, tents, hygiene kits, water storage tanks, generators, kitchen utensils, portable water purifiers, sleeping bags, essential medicines, wheelchairs, hand sanitizers, and medical consumables. This assistance underscores the urgent need for help following the devastating impacts of the earthquakes.
