Arrest of Lawmaker in Shocking Assault Case: Police Encounter Violence
In a shocking turn of events on Tuesday afternoon, a legislator accused of rape escaped from police custody, not merely fleeing but also firing a gun at the officers. The police have launched a manhunt for the accused legislator, Harmit Pathan Majra, and his associates, actively searching for a Scorpio and a Fortuner vehicle used in the escape.
Harmit, a member of the Aam Aadmi Party from Punjab’s Shanur, was arrested in the morning on rape charges. While being taken to a local police station, his accomplices opened fire on the police upon noticing them. Harmit also fired at the officers. In the chaos, as a police officer attempted to apprehend him, two SUVs hit him, allowing him to escape.
Although the movement of the Fortuner has been tracked on police radar, there has been no trace of legislator Harmit. The Scorpio remains unaccounted for, and the police have reportedly initiated a search operation to locate them.
Harmit faces multiple charges, including rape, extortion, and criminal intimidation. Recently, a woman filed a First Information Report (FIR) stating that Harmit had misrepresented himself as divorced, leading to a relationship in which he allegedly exploited her sexually, while also sending her threatening messages to maintain control over her.
According to the FIR, the 45-year-old complainant has been divorced and has a daughter living abroad. Her relationship with Harmit began in 2013, leading to a marriage in a Gurudwara in Ludhiana in 2021. However, a conflict arose when he mentioned his first wife’s name during his 2022 election oath, prompting her to demand a divorce.
Harmit has been in the news for some time, often criticizing the state government’s handling of the floods in Punjab. Following the filing of the FIR, he launched a fierce attack on Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
In a Facebook Live session, Harmit claimed that the Delhi AAP leadership is unlawfully controlling the government in Punjab, alleging a conspiracy against him. Despite the FIR, he maintains his innocence. He has also stated that his security was withdrawn as an act of intimidation, asserting that he would not be intimidated in such a manner, leading to the current situation.
