Tripura Police’s Bold Crackdown: Over 4.28 Lakh Ganja Saplings Destroyed
Law enforcement agencies in Tripura’s Sepahijala district have carried out a significant operation, uprooting and destroying approximately 428,000 ganja saplings in a single day, according to official reports released on Monday. This initiative is being recognized as one of the largest anti-drug efforts of its kind in the district.
The operation was launched following intelligence inputs that led a team, spearheaded by Smriti Kanta Bardhan, the officer-in-charge of Jatrapur Police Station, to join forces with personnel from the Tripura State Rifles. On Sunday, this collaboration resulted in the eradication of nearly 200,000 saplings from 12 nursery plots located deep in the forested regions of South Moheshpur, Katalia, under the Sonamura sub-division.
In a parallel effort, another operation was conducted under the leadership of Tapas Das, officer-in-charge of the Sonamura Police Station. Supported by the Border Security Force (BSF) and forest department officials, this team targeted 19 plots across 35 acres of forest land, destroying around 228,000 ganja plants.
Together, the two operations accounted for the destruction of over 428,000 ganja saplings, marking a milestone in the district’s fight against drug cultivation. Notably, in August, authorities had already dismantled approximately 791,000 ganja plants across 30 acres, in addition to eradicating 495,000 immature saplings in the Sonamura sub-division.
In a related incident, at Agartala Railway Station, police arrested three individuals from Bihar, including two women, after recovering 29 kilograms of dried ganja from them. This was confirmed by Obadur Rahaman, officer-in-charge of the Agartala GRP Police Station.
These operations highlight Tripura’s intensified efforts to combat ganja cultivation and trafficking, showcasing the coordinated action between police, paramilitary forces, and forest officials.
