Five Assamese Films Shine at 70th National Film Awards
Guwahati: Five films from Assam, three feature-length and two non-feature films, garnered significant recognition at the 70th National Film Awards for 2022. These films, illustrating a spectrum of stories from women’s self-discovery journeys to the inspiring life of Padmashri Birubala Rabha, were honored by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The feature films “Emuthi Puthi (A Very Fishy Trip)”, “Sikaisal (If Only Trees Could Talk)”, and “Xunyota (Void)” received the prestigious Rajat Kamal Award. Non-feature films “Birubala: Witch to Padmashri” and “Hargila — The Greater Adjutant Stork” earned special mention certificates.
“Emuthi Puthi”, selected as the best Assamese film, is directed by Kulanandini Mahanta and was uniquely shot on a phone. It narrates the tale of a rebellious teenager, Ritika, and her eccentric grandmother, Makhoni, who embarks on a 500 km journey seeking a mythical fish. “Sikaisal”, directed by Bobby Sarma Baruah and chosen as the best Tiwa language film, reveals the poignant story of a retired teacher confronting an empty, leaf-covered classroom. “Xunyota”, directed by Nabapan Deka and awarded best short film, delves into the profound themes of grief and loss through the eyes of a young girl named Bina, who faces immense changes when her mother becomes terminally ill. Directors and producers of these films have been awarded Rs 2,00,000 each.
“Hargila: The Greater Adjutant Stork”, directed by Parthasarathi Mahanta, and “Birubala: Witch to Padmashri”, directed by acclaimed actor Aimee Baruah, also received acclaim.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the winners, appreciating their significant contributions to Assamese cinema via a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Your contributions in taking forward Assamese cinema to new heights is well appreciated,” he stated.
