Shubhanshu Shukla’s Heartfelt Encounter with PM Modi: The Emotional Gift of a Tri-Colour Flag That Journeyed to Space!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to his residence in New Delhi on Monday, August 18, 2025, marking a significant moment as Shukla became the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). Shukla, who recently returned from the Axiom-4 commercial mission, met with Modi dressed in an Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) astronaut’s jacket, receiving a heartfelt embrace from the Prime Minister.
During their interaction, Shukla presented Modi with the mission patch from Axiom-4 and the Indian tricolor, which he had taken to the ISS. Notably, the tricolor was prominently displayed during Shukla’s virtual interactions with Modi on June 29, while the astronaut was aboard the space station.
In a post shared on X, Modi expressed pride in Shukla’s achievements and emphasized the importance of their conversation, which covered a range of topics including Shukla’s experiences in space and the advancements in science and technology pertinent to India’s ongoing efforts in space exploration, particularly the ambitious Gaganyaan mission. “Had a great interaction with Shubhanshu Shukla. We discussed a wide range of subjects including his experiences in space as well as India’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission. India is proud of his feat,” Modi wrote.
Born in Lucknow, Shukla showcased images taken from the ISS on a tablet during his visit, adding a visual dimension to their discussion. He shared that during the Axiom-4 mission, which launched from Florida on June 25 and docked at the ISS on June 26, he participated in more than 60 experiments and conducted 20 outreach sessions over the course of the 20-day mission.
Reflecting on the significance of his mission, Shukla noted the task bestowed upon him by Modi: to meticulously document his experiences for future Indian missions, particularly Gaganyaan. “I remember very well the homework given to me by the prime minister. And I completed it very well. I am very excited to come back and share it with you all. I am confident that all that knowledge is going to prove extremely useful and crucial for us, for our own Gaganyaan mission,” he stated in an earlier press briefing on August 1.
Shukla’s extraordinary journey came to a close when he returned to India on August 17, 2025. His achievements not only mark a milestone in Indian aerospace history but also provide valuable insights that will aid India’s future endeavors in space exploration.
The collaborative efforts of Shukla and his fellow astronauts-including Peggy Whitson from the U.S., Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary-underscore the global spirit of exploration in modern space missions. As India continues to pursue its ambitious Gaganyaan program, Shukla’s insights and documented learnings will play a crucial role in the nation’s journey toward becoming a significant player in the field of aerospace research.
In conclusion, the meeting encapsulates a moment of national pride and the promise of future advancements in space exploration. With the successful return of Shubhanshu Shukla and his groundbreaking contributions, India stands ready to embrace new frontiers in its quest for knowledge beyond Earth.
