Historic Comeback: PM Narendra Modi’s Powerful Visit to China for SCO Summit on August 31, 2023
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant trip to China and Japan starting around August 29, according to sources familiar with the matter, as reported by PTI on August 6. This upcoming visit marks Modi’s first journey to China since tensions between the two nations escalated following the military standoff in Galwan Valley in 2020. The visit is crucial as both countries have been actively working towards mending bilateral relations.
One of the highlights of this highly anticipated summit is expected to be a possible meeting between Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Their last interaction took place during the BRICS summit in Russia in October 2024. While there has been no official confirmation regarding the visit yet, the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Tianjin Summit, scheduled for August 31 to September 1, serves as a timely backdrop for this diplomatic engagement. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced the dates during a joint press briefing with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev, as reported by state-run Xinhua.
Prominent world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, are also expected to attend the SCO summit alongside Prime Minister Modi. Adding to the context, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently met with Xi Jinping in July, as part of a delegation of foreign ministers attending an SCO meeting. Jaishankar noted that he briefed Xi on recent developments in bilateral relations, sharing a photograph of their handshake on social media platform X.
The 2020 conflict in Galwan Valley, which resulted in casualties for both sides, marked a low point in India-China ties. Diplomatic tensions have lingered since then, but there are signs of thawing relations, including the revival of discussions and the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after nearly five years. A significant factor in this renewed dialogue reportedly stemmed from an exchange between Modi and Xi at a summit in Kazan, Russia, last October, where they agreed to enhance their discourse on various concerns.
In the first leg of his journey, Prime Minister Modi will visit Japan to hold annual summit talks with his Japanese counterpart. This marks Modi’s first visit to Japan since he attended the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima in May 2023. The discussions will likely encompass a range of bilateral issues, particularly in areas like trade, technology, and regional security, further strengthening Indo-Japanese collaboration.
As Modi prepares for this pivotal trip, both China and Japan are anticipated to engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at fostering stability and cooperation in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. The outcomes of these discussions could significantly shape regional dynamics and contribute to a more balanced relationship among these major Asian powers.
This upcoming diplomatic maneuver is not just a journey for bilateral talks but a critical moment in international relations, as India seeks to reaffirm its position while navigating sensitive ties with its neighbors.
