Washington: SpaceX successfully transported a new crew to the International Space Station (ISS) on Saturday, completing the journey in just 15 hours. The mission launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and included four astronauts from the U.S., Russia, and Japan. They will spend a minimum of six months aboard the orbiting laboratory, taking over for the current team who have been on station since March. SpaceX is scheduled to return the existing crew as early as Wednesday.
The newly arrived astronauts are NASA’s Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, along with Japan’s Kimiya Yui and Russia’s Oleg Platonov. Originally slated for different missions, they were reassigned due to unexpected circumstances. As soon as their capsule docked high above the South Pacific, Fincke cheerfully greeted, “Hello, space station!”
Cardman and another astronaut had been pulled from a previous SpaceX flight to accommodate NASA’s stranded astronauts, Boeing Starliner test pilots Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, whose planned week-long stay extended to over nine months. Meanwhile, Fincke and Yui, who had been preparing for the next Starliner mission, transitioned to SpaceX due to ongoing issues with the Starliner, which is currently grounded until 2026. Platonov’s path to the ISS was delayed after he was removed from the Soyuz launch schedule due to an undisclosed illness.
With the addition of this crew, the ISS now hosts 11 astronauts, a busy environment that promises increased collaboration and research opportunities in low Earth orbit. Upon arrival, the new team was welcomed with cold beverages and warm meals, ready to settle into their new routines.
While SpaceX’s trip was impressively swift, the record for the fastest journey to the ISS remains with the Russian Soyuz, achieving the feat in a remarkable three hours. As space exploration continues to evolve, this latest mission marks another milestone in international cooperation and commercial spaceflight.
