Shillong: Major Boost to Healthcare Infrastructure with New Babies’ Critical Care Unit
SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated a specialized Babies’ Critical Care Unit at Ganesh Das Government Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Shillong, marking a significant enhancement to the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
This facility is the first of its kind in a Meghalaya government hospital, focusing on high-risk pregnancies and advanced neonatal care. Equipped with Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU), Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), and Maternal Newborn Care Units (MNCU), the unit is designed to deliver critical care and support to the most vulnerable patients.
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Sangma stressed the importance of both advanced infrastructure and the dedication of healthcare professionals. He commended the team at Ganesh Das Hospital for their unwavering commitment and transformation efforts despite numerous challenges. “It is inspiring to see such dedication, and other health centers in the state should draw inspiration from this example,” said Sangma.
He also highlighted that around 9% of the state budget is allocated to the health sector and assured continued support for the hospital’s development.
Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who also attended the event, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing the best possible care for every patient and child. She described the new Babies’ Critical Care Unit as a beacon of hope for the citizens.
The SNCU-NICU complex, operational since May 1, 2024, was funded through resources generated from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana – Megha Health Insurance (PMJAY-MHI). The complex includes six NICU beds equipped with advanced features such as Non-Invasive and Invasive Ventilation, CPAP, and HFNC, as well as a 10-bed maternal and newborn care unit. Additional funding from Meghalaya Mineral Development Corporation Limited (MMDSL) and the office of the Directorate of Health Services (MI) supported the acquisition of equipment and staffing.
This development underscores the state’s commitment to improving healthcare, setting a new standard for maternal and child health services in Meghalaya.
