Monsoon clouds gathered over the Kempegowda Tower at Lalbagh, Bengaluru, captured by Murali Kumar K. The city has experienced a notable rise in temperature over the last few days, with the mercury climbing from a maximum of 28.5 degrees Celsius on August 10 to 31 degrees Celsius on August 15. Following a series of rainy and cooler days since July, residents reported a surge in summer-like heat and humidity recently. Karunya Rao from Peenya highlighted the unusual nighttime heat, prompting her to use the air-conditioner for the first time since May. Prakash V., a Kengeri resident, also mentioned it was futile to seek relief outdoors due to the persistent warmth.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the rise in temperature is attributed to the weakening monsoon. Director C. S. Patil explained that the city hasn’t experienced significant rainfall in the past fortnight, with only one cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea. In addition, Bengaluru’s urban landscape exacerbates the heat due to concrete structures and vast areas. Mr. Patil noted that this absence of rainfall increases temperatures quickly. The forecast suggests that temperatures will hover between 31 and 32 degrees Celsius in the coming days, with expected light rainfall.
The monsoon’s break in August follows July’s peak rainfall, indicating a weak monsoon in most parts of Karnataka. Light to moderate widespread rainfall is projected for south interior and coastal Karnataka, with a yellow alert in districts like Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, and Chikkamagaluru. The intensity of rainfall is anticipated to rise again around October 15 as the southwest monsoon withdraws and the northeast monsoon arrives, indicating good rainfall prospects in many parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, during October.
